Founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856
An inventor and fabric technologist, who predicted the advent of sportswear and steered its course, Thomas Burberry opened his shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856 when he was 21 years old. In 1888 he took out a patent for improved materials and was making waterproof garments by the turn of the century.
In 1901 Burberry designed clothes for the new leisured classes, sportswear and the utility raincoat – the famous Burberry check originated in Edinburgh in 1924, but became hot property in the 1960s. He also designed a new service uniform for British officers and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Outrig suit, worn on the British Everest Expedition of 1924.
The classic Burberry trenchcoat is recognized all over the world and has appeared many times on film including Torn Curtain (1966), Kramer Versus Kramer (1979), Wall Street (1987), Dick Tracy (1990) and The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), during the filming of which Peter Sellers always had two on set. Marcello Mastroianni used the classic trench in all his films during the 1950s and 1960s. Celebrity wearers included Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman and Jacques Tati.
Backed by an advertising campaign photographed by Mario Testino, the Burberry flagship store, at 18–22 Haymarket, London, has recently been beautifully revamped under the direction of Rose Marie Bravo, formerly of Manhattan’s Saks Fifth Avenue, who was appointed worldwide chief executive of Burberry in October 1997. The following February Roberto Menichetti, who previously worked for both Claude Montana and Jil Sander, was appointed creative director.
