CHÉRUIT, Madeleine

Founded by Madeleine Chéruit in 1900

Madeleine Chéruit was described in Vogue in 1915 as ‘a Louis XVI woman because she has the daintiness, the extravagant tastes, the exquisite charm, and the art of those French ladies who went gaily through the pre-revolution epoch.’ The house, designed by the architect Pierre Bullet and built in the early eighteenth century, extended from the place Vendôme to the rue des Petits-Champs. By 1915 the house of Chéruit was the property of Mesdames Wormser and Boulanger, who, Vogue observed in 1915, ‘keep the house to its original type but bring much originality to it’. Apart from gowns, Chéruit was famous for its evening wraps, work in fur, children’s clothes, lingerie, blouses and trousseaus.
