‘Minimal dressing had become so uniform, we felt that romantic and feminine was the only way to go,’ said Inacia Ribeiro, summing up his collection in 1997.
The couple, who met while they were students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, graduated with first-class honours in 1991 and married a year later. They worked as design consultants in Brazil before forming their own company in 1993. Clements Ribeiro are part of the new wave of British designers who mix colour, form and fabric in what they call an ‘irreverent take on traditional elegance’. Their influences range from urban gypsies and faded opulence to Elizabethan tailoring and textures, and the colours of the sea.
