Clergerie shoes are synonymous with luxury, quality, and a constant attention to detail. They appeared in the film Indecent Proposal (1993) as part of the accoutrements of a millionaire’s working wardrobe. Robert Clergerie is a fervent believer in simplicity: ‘Black is practical. It continues,’ he said in 1992. ‘You mustn’t confuse people with reality. It mixes them up.’
In 1992 he was awarded a design award from the Fashion Footwear Association of New York and opened a new store in Manhattan’s SoHo. Father of three, fluent in English, and able to talk eloquently about the shape of shoes to come, Clergerie launched an exhibition of his life’s work in Paris in March 1995, which travelled to New York and Hong Kong, and finished at the Shoe Museum in the shoemaking capital of Romans, France.
