David Emanuel, Born: Bridgend, Wales, 1952
Elizabeth Weiner, Born: London, England, 1953
The couple who have now gone their separate ways will forever be remembered as the designers behind the wedding dress of Diana, Princess of Wales. Unveiled on 31 July 1981, the most important royal wedding dress of the decade was made from pure silk taffeta overlaid with lace, mother-of-pearl sequins and pearls, with a double-flounce collar and 7.6-metre (25-foot) detachable train. A matching pochette and an umbrella were designed in the event of rain.
Already married when they entered the Royal College of Art in London, the Emanuels graduated in 1978 and launched their Mayfair boutique. They perfectly captured the mood of the moment - a mix of New Romantics and royal wedding fever. The then Lady Diana Spencer wore an Emanuel blouse for her first sitting for British Vogue. The Emanuels have since concentrated on their individual careers.
