Born: London, England, 1961
Bella Freud - daughter of artist Lucien and sister of novelist Esther - designs clothes like those she wears: schoolgirl coats and lean shapes. Her logo, drawn by her father Lucien, depicts his whippet, Pluto.
Freud worked as an assistant in Vivienne Westwood's Seditionaries shop in London's King's Road before going to Rome to study design at the Accademia di Costuma di Moda. On her return in 1984 she worked with Westwood on the `Mini-Crini' collection and became her assistant until she set up her own collection of 30 pieces in 1989. Her first show was in 1993.
Bella Freud had a bohemian childhood, and the year spent in Morocco with her mother and sister was immortalized in Esther's novel, Hideous Kinky (1992). She has been captured on canvas many times. Freud's father - who critics regard as the greatest living artist - often slips into the shows unnoticed.
